September 17, 2020. A unique collaborative effort by the De Rybel (VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology) and Saeys (VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research) labs has pioneered the development of single-cell transcriptomics in plants. In doing so, they identified how plants translate indications of low phosphate availability into growth adaptation.

September 1, 2020. Dirk Inzé joins Désiré Collen, Peter Carmeliet, and Bart De Strooper as VIB member of the prestigious Academia Europeae. The Academia Europeae is a European, non-governmental association. Membership is by invitation only and all members are scientists and scholars who collectively aim to promote learning, education and research.
Inge de Clerq is awarded an ERC Starting Grant
September 3, 2020. Inge De Clerq from the Oxidative Stress Signalling group has been awarded an ERC starting grant worth €1.5 million. These renowned, highly competitive grants aim to help individual scientists and scholars to build their own teams and conduct pioneering research across all disciplines. With her project COSI, Inge will investigate how plants perceive stress signals and manage their internal 'communication' to trigger the optimal response.
Watching plant evolution on historical paintings
July 14, 2020. The plants we eat often look very different from their wild ancestors. In an interdisciplinary collaboration, Prof. Ive De Smet and Dr. David Vergauwen (Amarant) explore how we can use historical paintings to trace the genetic changes in our plant foods. They also provide a way for all art lovers to contribute.
Alain Goossens elected as EMBO member

Every year, new members are selected from among Europe’s top-scientists based on a large range of accomplishments, scientific excellence and pioneering research. EMBO membership is one of most highly prized recognitions of excellence in the life sciences for individual researchers. This year, Alain Goossens joins the other PSB EMBO members Jenny Russinova, Wout Boerjan and Dirk Inzé.
